Marks & Spencer: A Supermarket Experience in Edinburgh

Marks & Spencer (M&S) in Edinburgh promises a blend of great produce, quality food options, and a shopping experience designed for everyone. However, recent customer feedback highlights both its strengths and areas needing improvement.

In-Store Shopping and Accessibility

Shopping at M&S can be a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, the store presents a wheelchair-accessible entrance and wheelchair-accessible car park, making it a choice destination for those with mobility concerns. Customers appreciate the wide aisles that facilitate easy navigation. However, some find the crowd can make shopping overwhelming, especially during peak hours.

Offerings and Highlights

The supermarket is known for its food offerings, particularly the bakery section that has garnered rave reviews. Shoppers often highlight the quality of bakery goods and well-displayed fresh produce. Yet, there have been complaints regarding the lack of stock and quality in various departments, which detracts from the overall experience of what is advertised as a premium store.

Cafe Experience

The M&S cafe offers a cozy spot to enjoy a meal or a quick refreshment. Despite the quick visit potential, many patrons have reported delays in service and issues with cleanliness. Reviews indicate that staff shortages in the cafe lead to dirty tables and slow service, resulting in a less-than-desirable dining experience.

Payment Options and Convenience

M&S offers a range of payments including cash only at some locations and the option for NFC mobile payments. While cash-only policies have frustrated some shoppers, many appreciate having multiple payment methods that cater to different client preferences.

Delivery and In-Store Pick-Up

For those who prefer shopping from home, M&S provides delivery options and in-store pick-up, allowing customers to conveniently collect their online orders. However, experiences with orders have been inconsistent, leading to confusion among shoppers when items are not available as expected.

Customer Service Insights

While many employees exhibit LGBTQ+ friendly attitudes and provide commendable service, others have fallen short, leading to notable dissatisfaction among customers. Some feedback suggests a need for better training and availability of staff, particularly during busy times. It's clear that providing adequate support could transform a mediocre shopping experience into an exemplary one.

Packing It Up: Parking and Location

Accessibility also extends to parking. M&S at Fort Kinnaird offers a free parking lot, although it can get crowded. Many shoppers recommend visiting during off-peak hours to find a space more easily.

Marks and Spencer Edinburgh stands out for its top-quality food selections and community-friendly policies but requires significant improvements in customer service and stock management for an enhanced shopping experience.

Do not squander your time, even if you have a coffee coupon. The service is downright dreadful and definitely not worth the dime. The fare is far from fresh.
Lawrence Ramos (16/08/2025, 02:45):
Quite the shocking experience at this premium game store. I couldn't find much fresh produce at all. There was a complete absence of staff on the shop floor to help with any product questions. I must say, I really dislike how they strongly encourage you to use the self-service checkouts. I much prefer being assisted by a human. They definitely need more staff around.
Judy Kelly (16/08/2025, 00:07):
The place is spotless and lovely. The staff were friendly and welcoming, with a wide selection of sandwich options to choose from.

Feedback from my lively nonagenarian mother who visited on Thursday afternoon - her 'favourite local shop' (funnily enough). Upon realizing she had misplaced her spectacles, she rang up that evening to check if they had been discovered. At that juncture, they had not yet turned up, but to her joy and surprise, the next morning on Friday she was greeted by a kind staff member who informed her that they had been located. She is extremely appreciative! Many thanks. 😀

My spouse and I frequent M&S, marvelous shop. Popped into the café today, had the finest cuppa of coffee ever. So splendid we indulged in another. Kudos to FREYA, our barista. 👍👍👍...

This place has been recently spruced up and it's quite lovely without breaking the bank.

They offer a fantastic high tea for two at £17, which is a steal compared to other spots charging between £25 and £35.

Don't be misled by the affordable price, this high tea is something special...lol
Martha Anderson (04/08/2025, 16:04):
The store was neat and organized as always, but I must say I cannot recommend the café. The price for a tiny slice of cake was £3! I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon.
Barbara Sullivan (03/08/2025, 15:45):
The filter coffee was lukewarm. There weren't enough staff manning the tills and brewing coffee, resulting in lengthy queues. Additionally, the coffee counter was absolutely filthy.
Rebecca Gonzalez (02/08/2025, 23:05):
Absolutely brilliant service when I took my daughter to get measured for her first bra. She was a bit nervous at first, but the lovely staff quickly put her at ease and she ended up really enjoying the whole experience.
Amy Jones (02/08/2025, 05:21):
Top-notch customer service, I must say! Yvonne over at the service desk was an absolute delight and very helpful when we were signing up our sparks card to score some discounts on our shopping spree. Cheers!

I say, what a frightful situation! The chaps at Supermarket forgot to update their Christmas Eve hours, resulting in myself and several others missing closing time by a mere 3 minutes. Utterly frustrating, I must say! One would expect better attention to detail from such an establishment.
Shirley Myers (31/07/2025, 21:49):
I am absolutely appalled by the treatment I received from the multi-billion pound company Marks and Spencer! I placed my little girl in one of their shopping carts and the cart tore her brand new coat. Just picture if it had been her skin that was damaged, leaving her scarred for life! They requested evidence from me, which I provided. They examined the carts afterward and found no faults (without inspecting the specific cart from the incident), asked for the damaged coat to be sent in, then demanded the receipt. Due to the cost of the coat, they claimed it wasn't their responsibility and refused to replace it, despite their carts causing the damage! Absolutely disgraceful. I am utterly stunned by their reaction. Now I must purchase a new coat due to their neglect. The stress and anxiety this whole ordeal has caused me is unfathomable—I dreaded each email from them as they didn't trust me and showed no concern. To make matters worse, this all unfolded on Christmas Eve, casting a shadow over my Christmas Day as it consumed my thoughts. Can someone confirm if this is legal? I will have to take legal action against them now. What a headache! I only went in for a cookie tin, I wish I hadn't bothered. It sickens me.
Wayne Price (30/07/2025, 06:50):
We make a point of visiting the supermarket every week, and we're particularly excited about it now that they have all their Christmas goodies in stock. The staff is always so friendly and helpful, and we love stopping for a coffee while we're there. 😉
Amanda Long (29/07/2025, 12:53):
I must say, I popped into the Marks and Spensers food hall at Fort Kinnaird Edinburgh today on the 30th of November, 2020. As luck would have it, I managed to misplace my sunglasses whilst perusing the delightful selection. Backtracking promptly, I approached two staff members for help, only to be met with complete disregard on both occasions. Understandably, I wasn't anticipating a full-blown search party for my misplaced accessory; however, a simple gesture such as providing me with a contact number to inquire about my lost item later on would have sufficed. Regrettably, this lack of basic customer service has resulted in Marks and Spensers losing a dedicated patron.
Arthur Perez (25/07/2025, 17:42):
The clothing section was alright, not a huge selection, but at least it was clean and well-lit.

I recently started using a wheelchair and had trouble maneuvering through the stands, especially in the lingerie aisle. I couldn't even reach the tights I wanted to see.

It would be fantastic if M&S could rearrange their displays to accommodate people with mobility aids like wheelchairs.
Chloe Sullivan (24/07/2025, 20:12):
The usual M&S service and top-notch quality products. Particularly convenient to have all items under one roof.
Bradley Parker (23/07/2025, 10:43):
Big thank you to Janey and Cathy from the food hall at M&S Fort Kinnaird for their top-notch customer service during my daughter's recent birthday cake mix-up. Cheers for being so kind and understanding. You both are absolutely fantastic!
Adam Howard (22/07/2025, 08:10):
Just got back from a trip to the Marks & Spencer at Fort Kinnaird. I borrowed a wheelchair for my mum who has a disability (we were there to buy her some new trousers). We found 2 pairs and finished our outing with a fruit scone and coffee at the cafe. The store and cafe were bustling, but we had a pleasant visit and the staff were delightful and accommodating.
Lauren Price (20/07/2025, 15:55):
I successfully purchased all of my son's school clothes for the upcoming year. Last year, we struggled to find anything in-store and had to resort to shopping online.

I was pleasantly surprised by the affordability of everything, especially with their 3 for 2 offer on high-quality, soft cotton shorts for the summer. I bought 2 pairs of school shorts for only £10, assuming that price was for just one pair.

One issue that I consistently encounter in various stores is the limited choices and sizes available for male clothing. It's puzzling how a store can be so big yet offer such a small selection for boys and men, who also need clothes like women and girls. The disparity in options between girls' and boys' school attire is striking – from skirts, shirts, blouses, and dresses to shoes, jumpers, and cardigans. Boys seem to have significantly fewer choices.

When it comes to school shoes, for instance, there were only two types for boys tucked away in a small corner, while girls had a wide selection displayed across multiple bays. We ended up not getting any shoes because my son didn't like either pair – one was unappealing and the other seemed overpriced.

The imbalance extends to swimwear, underwear, jackets, full outfits, accessories, and more, where the girls' section dominates the kids' area, leaving little space for boys' clothing. Even the back-to-school display took up half of the kids' section, raising questions about whether the boys' options get reduced or if more girls' items are brought in once the boys' stock runs low. The same applies to baby clothes, which often occupy more space than boys' clothing.

Men and boys have just as much interest in fashion as women and girls. They deserve equal space and variety in clothing options. Shopping for my son and husband can be a real challenge due to the lack of choices available to them.

Visited MARKS & SPENCER KINNAIRD PARK today for the first time for a clothing fitting! They were absolutely splendid.
So accommodating and willing to help.
What delightful employees.
